Many style and fashion blogs will discuss upcoming trends for the season, which we’ve also covered here. Yet, I’ve realized that regardless of the season, prints and patterns will always be in style. Being able to mix different prints without clashing is somewhat of an acquired talent, but today we’re going to show you a couple ways to work different patterns into one cohesive look. And don’t worry, we’ll make sure you look like a total fashionista!
One way to approach this is to make sure that the two patterns you are wearing fall within the same color categories. If they share similar hues, the look will come off seeming much more streamlined. Here, purple is clearly the main color, but from an aztec-ish tribal print jacket, to a flamingo printed dress, it still works! Or for something that’s a little more subtle, classic colors like navy and white make many patterns mesh together easily.
On the other hand, choosing two opposing color palettes is also a route to take. The difference here is that instead of blending the two patterns, you are using it as an opportunity to make each stand out on their own. Make sure that the colors at least look good next to each other, and that the prints are different enough–if they’re too similar it will look awkward. Polka dots and stripes? Yes. Chevron print with stripes? Not so much. This is a perfect display of bold colors and bold prints living in harmony together: Navy and gold are a home run, and dainty stars next to embellishments are tied together with a neutral accessory (the clutch).
A final rule to live by is that stripes are essentially a neutral. From high waisted skirts, to printed pants, you’ll see that it just works. This is also a good option for those of us who are just starting to dabble in the mixing prints trend. Stripes ensure an effortlessness to your entire look.
So there you have it, you can now mix prints and patterns without seeming like you’re going through an identity crisis, or that you got dressed in the dark! This trend is seasonless you have all year round to experiment with different looks and what works best on your body. Enjoy!
