Summer is here and you know what that means, time for vacation! Whether it’s using up the rest of your vacation days, or trying to get everyone together for family vacations, there’s always the struggle of figuring out what, and how to pack for any upcoming trip. If you’re going on a long trip or a quick weekend getaway, today I’m sharing some great items to always have in your bag.

First, think about your shoes. These are usually the bulkiest items, but also the easiest to reuse from day to day. Depending on the agenda of your trip, it’s always good to have a pair of sandals that can double as dress shoes, and a comfortable walking shoe as well. The following two pairs are both lightweight so they won’t weigh you down–the sandals can easily be pulled off with either a more formal night outfit or a daytime look, while the sneakers are cute enough to wear into town, but also keep you comfortable for a more active day.

The boat shoes come with a textured soul and added support, and can be found for around $40, and the strappy sandals can be found for around $50.

Next are basic outfits that you can re-use just by changing the accessories. A basic dress is a must have, like this one from H&M. Throw it in your bag and pack a statement belt for one day, a cute cardigan for another, and an edgy vest for day three. And voila! with just three garments and one accessory, you have 3 different yet complete outfits. Even better, the dress is just $12.95!

We all probably know by know, that no matter how much you plan for it, you really cannot predict the weather. Play it safe and always travel with a lightweight cardigan. A favorite is this kimono style sweater from Free People which is comfortable enough to lounge in, but presentable enough to wear overtop a dress or with a skirt (maybe outfit #4 with the dress above?)

And to leave you with one last tip to pack like a pro, always pack lightest to heaviest. Shoes one the bottom, denim or knit in the middle, and delicates on top. And don’t forget to leave room for souvenirs!
