Happy Halloween! This holiday is observed around the world, but the United States definitely takes it to a new level. Originally, the day was meant to observe the eve of All Saints Day, celebrating those who made it to Heaven (congrats guys!). But today we know it as the day where running to strangerʼs house and demanding candy (because who really chooses a trick over a treat?) is acceptable, costume parties are expected, and of course the advertising industry celebrating the millions of dollars in revenue created from cards, candy, decorations, and costumes. As children, the costumes were taken almost as seriously as who could collect the most candy in their pillowcase, yet as Iʼve grown up I realized that Halloween costumes are still fun–yes, even for adults. Itʼs the perfect excuse to wear something ridiculous, extravagant, even scandalous. Incase youʼre still scrambling to throw something together for an upcoming party, here are my favorite costumes for this year. Some are sexy, some are scary, but hey itʼs the one day a year where thatʼs the point!
Depending on who you ask, Halloween was either celebrated last weekend, mid-week this week, or next week if you live in a state where it’s been officially rescheduled due to Hurricane Sandy. Given this, I’m splitting the difference and talking about it today.
Group costumes are some of my favorite, often related to pop-culture, theyʼre clever, funny, and you wonʼt be self-conscious since youʼll have a whole group dressed the same as you. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Hugh Hefner and his Playboy bunnies, a box of Crayons, the options are literally endless. You could always risk a political costume (Romneyʼs “Binder Full of Women”), but to avoid offending anyone Iʼd recommend to go for something light-hearted instead. This year I couldnʼt stop cracking up at “Cereal Killers,” –you and your friends all dress up as a different cereal box character (Captʼn Crunch, The Lucky Charm Leprechaun, the Trix Bunny), and pretend to kill people all night. Itʼs goofy, kind of scary, and would definitely make for some funny pictures.
I think sexy costumes are the most fun, and the easiest to create. You can literally put the word “sexy” in front of any profession, and voilà! You have a costume! But to avoid wearing the same thing as six other women at a party, stay away from clichés like the sexy nurse/cop/teacher. Adding a sultry twist to something goofy is fail-proof because it shows your sense of humor, but also that youʼre a total bombshell. Try bringing a new look to Hogwarts with an all-grown-up Hermione Granger.
A true girly-girl at heart, this is the one day of the year where I can dress-up, and act like a princess and get away with it. Kiss Me Deadly has a one of my favorite pieces, mimicking a darker version Snow White .
Or, you can go for the sweeter approach with something like this.
